Pistons

If you have ever replaced OEM Yamaha pistons and/or rings, you likely were comforted by the discovery that there was a slight taper at the bottom of the cylinder. Before you thank the mfg, note that this was machined in at the factory to facilitate the initial assembly of the engine. Time is money, after all. It does make replacements easier and reasonably toolless. A problem arises when you run pistons more than a couple of millimeters larger than stock: after boring the cylinder the taper is removed and squeezing those stiff after-market rings into a straight bore becomes challenging.

More to come . . .
